Artist Profile
James is an emerging pounamu carver whose journey began in the Mountain Jade Studio after finishing high school. With a talent for storytelling through his art, his path has been one of exploration, growth, and a deep connection to his culture. After spending seven years honing his craft within the walls of our studio and learning the foundations of carving from Tamaora Walker, James felt the pull of the wider world, embarking on a four-year hiatus, eager to soak up diverse experiences and perspectives. This time away from carving moulded him, shaping his perspectives and outlook on life and growing his collection of stories to tell.
As he reconnects with his craft, he's delving deeper into his cultural heritage. Pūrākau and pakiwaitara (Māori stories and legends) shape how James views the world, and he derives mātauranga (knowledge and understanding) from the stories of te ao Māori (the world of Māoridom). He puts the messages of these stories into his carvings, allowing people to feel the āhua (essence) of those legends. As an emerging artist finding his way in carving, James always finds it important to reflect on where he started, allowing him to stay humble, while acknowledging Tamaora’s guidance throughout his journey. By basing his work on the tikanga (traditions and values) of Te Arawa, James can always remain confident in all aspects of his carving journey.
Back in the Mountain Jade studio, James is excited to witness a renewed embrace of Māori culture among the wider team, knowing together, they're fostering kotahitanga (unity) and understanding, and bridging the gap between Māori and non-Māori communities through a shared love of pounamu. James is from Te Arawa, Ngāti Te Roro o Te Rangi.
