Artist Profile
Alex has been carving since childhood and is an expert at working with jade, as well as other mediums like Māori wood carving. His work is inspired by Aotearoa and traditional carving practices, as well as western culture and style. This is evident in his work, specialising in wearable art and sculptures, using complementary materials that showcase traditional designs as well as more contemporary forms of art.
Alex is of Māori descent from the tribe Ngāti Kahungunu o Te Wairoa, Aotearoa New Zealand, and has an intriguing blend of cultural roots from England, Scotland, and Ireland. Though he was born and raised in the enchanting landscapes of New Zealand, his formative years were enriched by his time in China, where his creative spark ignited at the tender age of 12. Using modest tools like files and small chisels, he began crafting intricate wonders from soft stone. He has since dedicated his life to sourcing, exploring, and creating beautiful pieces of jade. Not content to stop there, he has expanded his artistic horizons to encompass bone, wood, and precious metals as well. The heart of his work lies in capturing the essence of Aotearoa's beauty and the core values cherished by its people.
