Andrew began his journey with jade and hard-stone carving in 2005. Carving pounamu has been a transformative and enduring journey for Andrew, guiding him on a path of self-discovery, and connecting him deeply with his heritage and homeland. As an artist of part Ngāi Tahu descent, originally hailing from the scenic West Coast of the South Island, he now resides in Christchurch where he works as a pounamu carver and artist.
Andrew draws inspiration from ancient cultures and their art forms, including Māori, Celtic, and Viking. Myths, legends, and unexplained mysteries also inspire his work. Constantly pushing the boundaries with design and craftsmanship, he carves using a broad range of styles, creating unique and distinctive pieces. For Andrew, carving Pounamu is an ever-evolving odyssey, an art that constantly challenges him to learn and evolve. Each day, he immerses himself in the creative process, guided by the wisdom of the ancients and the artistic expressions of diverse cultures.
