It was helping in his father’s jewellery factory more than 40 years ago that first led Neil to carving. He was entranced by the luminous pounamu he discovered there, sparking a lifelong obsession with the stone. Traditional Māori carving and the natural world heavily influence his designs, though always with a contemporary twist. “I’m always looking to do things better, so my work is always evolving,” Neil says.
